In light of the recent violence being experienced in the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise, the Africa Center for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development, CDS Africa, strongly condemns the disruptions that have marred this crucial democratic process.
The Limited Voter Registration Exercise is a fundamental aspect of our democracy, providing eligible citizens with the opportunity to exercise their right to vote and participate in shaping the future of Ghana. As an organization committed to upholding democratic values, we condemn any action that seeks to undermine the democratic principles upon which Ghana's governance is built. The violence, intimidation, and disorder being witnessed in the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise have no place in a democratic society and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
These actions not only threaten the safety and security of citizens but also risk disenfranchising potential voters due to fear of being attacked or harmed thereby undermining the whole process. In a democratic society, every eligible citizen should have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote without fear or intimidation. The implications of these disturbances on Ghana's democracy are grave, as they can prevent individuals from participating in the electoral process and shaping the future of the nation. We must take a stand against such actions and ensure that all eligible voters can exercise their democratic rights freely and without hindrance.
We commend the Ghana Police Service for swiftly responding to disruptions and interdicting three Police personnel over their failure to perform their duty professionally in the ongoing Limited Voter registration. We urge the police to immediately investigate incidents of violence and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
We also call upon all stakeholders, including political parties, the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and civil society organizations, to prioritize dialogue, cooperation, and respect for the rule of law in addressing the challenges facing the Limited Voter Registration process. All parties involved must work together to ensure that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to register to vote in a safe and secure environment.
As Ghana prepares for upcoming elections, we urge all stakeholders to prioritize the peaceful conduct of the exercise and ensure that every citizen can exercise their right to vote without fear or intimidation.
